An English Pronunciation GuideFor Kinyarwanda Speakers

Kinyarwanda treats r and l as one sound, so English words like right and light, or grass and glass, can sound the same. Copying an American accent makes it worse: the American t sounds like the Kinyarwanda r, so writing is heard as riding.

This guide teaches the Standard English version of each sound, the one that is easiest for Kinyarwanda speakers to say clearly, in six short rules with audio for every example.

The six rules

Say every t in full

Stop the air completely with your tongue for every t you see in the spelling.

Thirteen versus thirty

Stress the end of -teen numbers and the start of -ty numbers.

Keep r and l apart

l: the tongue touches the ridge and stays. r: the tongue touches nothing.

After a vowel, drop the r

Say r only when a vowel sound comes straight after it.

Keep the o in hot, job and stop

Say hot, job and stop with the Kinyarwanda o, short.

Use your long vowels

Hold every long vowel about twice as long as the short one.
